(Now on UNESCO's WORLD HERITAGE list). Þingvellir, situated by the biggest lake in Iceland called Þingvallavatn, is the site of the world's oldest democratic parliament founded in the year 930. The beautiful canyon running through the park is actually the meeting point of two of the earth's tectonic plates and the area's combination of natural phenomena and historical significance make it inseparable from the fabric of Icelandic national life. Onwards from Þingvellir we continue to over Lyngdalsheiði Plateau, through the small summer village of Laugarvatn until we reach Geysir area. Once there we will discover the famous Geysir which has given its name to hot springs all over the world. You will also see one of the most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, spouting up to 30 meters. From there we go to one of the most impressive waterfall in Europe, Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall). Here you will see thousands of tons of icy water thunder majestically down in a double-fall into a deep gorge, surely a powerful sight. From Gullfoss we start heading back to Reykjavík over the mountain pass of Hellisheidi Heath arriving in Reykjavik in late afternoon.
