Study Tours - fact and fun

Tour 1: Hellisheidi Power Plant

Friday 27.03.2009  Time: 15:40

Expert guided tour to a state of the art geothermal power plant of Reykjavík Energy.

Near Reykjavík is a new immensely powerful geothermal station operated by the City of Reykjavík which is used in various ways to improve the quality of life of the city's residents and guests. The Hellisheidi power station, which we will visit, lies by Hengill, a mountain situated on an active volcano ridge. Estimate production for the Hellisheidi plant is 300 MW electricity and 400 MW thermal energy. The plant (started 2006) will be build in stages and can be expanded considerably.

Tour 2: Carbon recycling project at Svartsengi Power plant

Friday 27.03.2009 Time: 15:40

A visit to The Svartsengi Geothermal Power plant (40 km from Reykjavík).   The Power Plant, with three individual steam turbine systems, reaches a capacity of 76 MW electricity and 150 MW thermal energy. The Power plant is connected to the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, which is world renown for its skin healing power, using the geothermal seawater from the plant which contains active ingredients from this unique geothermal heat & power plant.

In addition to a presentation to the Power plant, an introduction will be given on the “carbon recycling” project which the Power plant is involved in.  Carbon Recycling International captures CO2 from industrial emissions and converts it to renewable fuel for automobiles and industries.  For more information on Carbon Recycling International. Tour 3: Landfill gas as vehicle bio fuel

Friday 27.03.2009 Time: 15:40

The city of Reykjavik and six other municipalities have coordinated their solid waste disposal through an independent nonprofit firm named SORPA which collects the methane gas produced in the landfill site for energy, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Distribution of the methane products are organized through a separate entity of SORPA called Metan Ltd. The methane is mainly used as vehicle fuel.  For today approximately 120 vehicles including city buses, waste trucks, service cars and private cars are powered by methane from the landfill.

In this tour we will visit to the landfill site at Álfsnes, 20 km north of Reykjavík and get an overview of the production and use of methane.   On the way back to Reykjavik a short stop will be made at a methane filling station.
